Dark Tourism: Form to Narrative

Dark Tourism: Form to Narrative

This was one of the initial exercises in our Design V course. We were expected to research different typologies of architectural form and create models to represent them. Then we would bring the model to life by turning it into an architectural section and constructing a narrative that fits within the section.
This model represented stacked box forms, and showed how a standard rigid volume like the cube isn't restricting at all. Rather, it can be used as a building block or module to create flexible forms.
The studio's theme was dark tourism so I wanted to use my model to represent how deceiving some of the dark tourism destinations can be, and how something seemingly very normal could hide something much darker deep within. I took a close up of the model and traced it.
I mirrored the structure on the other side to further reinforce the idea that there are two very different sides to the same coin. The section line cuts through a mountain, where I've hidden the second mirrored structure. I connected both of them with the architectural section where my spaces and functions were going to be visible.
The final details were added to further connect the spaces and bring the narrative to life.
And this was the final result: an underground drug cartel facility harbouring illegal activities deep in the mountain while maintaining the appearance of a normal honey farm on the outside. I called it Escobar's C̶o̶c̶a̶i̶n̶e̶ Honey Farms.
